New Panteg Steelers 38 Bedwas Barbarians 31

With the poor weather finally relenting, all in attendance at Jarrolds fields were treated to some sunshine rugby, with both teams intent on playing an expansive game. The lead constantly changed hands during a ten try extravaganza, with some superb individual and team tries from both teams. Bedwas RFC were quicker out of the traps with clever offloading, resulting in an early converted score. Powerful running from flanker Anquetil and an astute offload to the supporting Davies narrowed the gap, before a quick tap penalty increased the Baa Baas lead. A quick penalty of their own saw prop Bowles pinball his way over with a forceful run. Davies added the conversion before a Barbarians penalty. Just before the interval centre Reader embarked on a stylish, mazy run, before deftly transferring to winger Gibbs to finish unopposed. A half time score of 17 apiece was a true reflection of a highly competitive forty minutes, and the second period was greatly anticipated.
The visitors gained the lead again with some high tempo play together with some questionable defence, before a moment of individual brilliance. Replacement centre Kents first contribution was sublime, as he beat numerous defenders with his dancing feet to score a magnificent individual try. The Steelers next score was more mundane but highly efficient as quick hands put Gibbs into space and he finished clinically. Davies converted from the touchline, courtesy of the crossbar. With a 7 point lead the Steelers tried to put the game to bed with some enterprising play. Running deep from their own 22, a wayward pass was opportunistically intercepted for a score beneath the sticks to tie the scoreboard. A tied ball game would have been in reflection, a fair result but the Steelers had other ideas. Another attack from deep inside their 22 area, saw influential centre Heneghan slice through a desperate defence. A perfectly timed and unselfish pass saw Gibbs collect his hatrick and the spoils for the Steelers.
Skipper Joe Young was named Man of the Match for fighting off chronic cramp and a massive hangover to again lead his troops by tremendous example.
There is a continuous and fabulous work ethic being implemented by all involved across the board at New Panteg RFC. This has resulted in two sides being fielded, despite grass roots rugby generally struggling in Wales. There has also been a constant stream of New Panteg players regularly permitted to local neighbouring teams to aid their survival. This is something we are justifiably proud of, and will endeavour to continue to develop.
