Making 12 changes from last weeks starting line up and playing opposition two leagues above some may have expected a one sided encounter, however this game was far from that. New Panteg defended robustly from the start as a a well drilled Newport outfit launched attack after attack. Openside flanker Charlie Gardner made numerous telling tackles ably supported by tight forwards Dom Gibbons and acting captain Liam Bailey. The Old Boys eventually crossed the try line after a dubious pass was waved on by the referee and they went into the interval leading by 10 points to nil.
The hosts were soon further ahead when they pushed New Panteg off their own scrum ball and powered over in the corner, this was excellently converted by the home kicker. New Panteg were now beginning to gain more possession and their teenage wingmen Lewis Silver and Ashley Fowler were gaining good ground at every opportunity. Quick thinking by scrum half Connor Imms saw Liam Bailey canter over for a fine try. The Old Boys then upped their game showing their obvious class and crossed for two excellent converted scores but New Panteg failed to give in. A few changes of personel in the backline resulted in a shift of superiority and New Panteg finished the game much the stonger. Debutant fly half Lewis Bury finished off a flowing move to score his first try for the club and the extras were slotted by substitute Alex Gwatkin. New Panteg were denied a further consolation score when in the best move of the whole game the final pass to Lloyd Jackson was deemed to be forward.
The coaches now have the dubious responsibility of picking a squad to play Deri with players putting their hands up in every position. There were stand out performances by Hooker Dan Warren, centres Liam Gibbs and Lloyd Jackson, but the man of the match was awarded to Charlie Gardner for his all action industrious performance.
