New Panteg 8 Newport Saracens 12

New Pantegs Principality dream was ended at the semi final stage by an experienced and efficient Newport Saracens outfit at a saturated Nelson RFC. With the majority of local games again falling foul to the elements, a field more conducive to bog snorkeling was expected. Both teams are more than capable of playing fast, free flowing rugby, but this was negated by the weather, and in fairness the game was mostly a dour affair. Tegs plan B wasn't as efficient as the Sarries pick and drive game, and they paid a heavy price for squandering numerous scoring chances. Although Teg led by 3 points at the interval, courtesy of a Dan James penalty, Sarries came out revitalised in the second period.
Fragile tackling saw the Sarries open their account with a converted try, before concerted pressure led to a second soon after. Teg camped in their opponents 22 for the final 20 minutes, but a combination of poor decisions and robust defence denied Teg until the final play of the game. Winger Davies cantered over for what would be scant consolation. There were no excuses tendered by the coaching team, who accepted defeat with good grace, as did Sarries accept victory with great humility. We wish the Sarries all the very best in the final, and look forward to two further encounters this season, which could be league defining. A special mention also to Nelson RFC who hosted the game with fabulous efficiency. From the ground staff work, to the excellent and abundant bar staff, and the sumptuous VIP buffet, it was outstanding.
Nobody who pulled on a jersey could be faulted for their effort and skipper Dan Scott was singled out as Man of the Match, with yet another magnificent display. Despite the disappointment of the loss, it is evident New Panteg are making massive strides both on and off the pitch, which everyone involved should be incredibly proud of.
