New Pantegs newly formed and recently Christened team, the Steelers, took the field for their debut performance with an away trip to Monmouth Druids. It has been a long time since a Teg side has competed in the Ivor Jones Cup, a competition they dominated for many years, but the Steelers met the challenge head on. With only one player participating on the day from last week's 23 man squad, it was going to be an acid test of Tegs squad strength. From the outset the Steelers were dominant at scrum time, with the returning Woolfall and Rowles hugely prominent. A long kick downfield early on from the Druids looked innocuous to the watching Steelers faithful. Fullback Elliot Jones easily fielded the kick on his own 22m line and took the ball to the onrushing defence. A sublime kick over the top to himself was gloriously taken at pace, and the last defender was left clutching at air. Mapp added the conversion, before the hosts came to life with a seven pointer of their own to level.There was an increased level of excitement every time Jones was on the ball, and he scored a second fabulous try on the half hour. A recent recruit to the Teg squad, Jones is proving to be a huge asset, with his pace, balance and seige gun boot.

The Druids excellent lineout and defensive cohesion were keeping them in touching distance, until an indiscretion resulted in a penalty try for the Steelers. With two incredible individual tries to his name already, Jones put the icing on the cake, with the best score of the day and his hatrick. Numerous would be defenders were beaten with sumptuous ease, as Jones ran in from 80m to score a try he converted himself to book a semi final slot. The Druids played to the final whistle, and to their credit scored a consolation try with the games last play.

Jones was quite obviously named man of the match, but the most pleasing aspect of the game was the obvious quality and strength of Tegs large squad, with more signings predicted before the month end deadline.
