Newport Saracens 27 New Panteg 15

New Panteg travelled to old adversaries Newport Saracens RFC with a much changed team from the opening league fixture. Having played the Sarries regularly in the past few campaigns, Teg knew exactly what to expect. However knowing your opponents tactics and strengths, and being able to negate them are two entirely different entities. As expected the Sarries played a tight, hard carrying game, with subtle offloads, and Teg often struggled to cope.
The hosts opened the scoring with a well struck penalty, before Teg used their limited possession to strike back. A searing break from centre Nattaphong, and good handling, put talisman Bury over in the corner, for Teg to take the lead for the only time in the game. Unfortunately Bury was forced off soon afterwards with a knee injury, quickly followed by scrum half Winstone with a knock to the head. Losing two of the teams most influential players was a huge setback. Sarries regained the lead they were never to relinquish with a converted charge down try, swiftly followed by another 7 pointer from a powerful driving maul. Whenever Teg put width into their game they looked extremely dangerous, and a quick tap penalty and good angles of running, put prolific winger Gomez over wide out. Sarries added a further penalty for a halftime score of 20 - 10.
The second period saw Sarries score a further converted try to effectively take the game away from the visitors. Any attempts for Teg to gain a foothold in the game were frustratingly thwarted by constant and sometimes baffling penalty indiscretion decisions. Another sumptuous break from Nattaphong put Gomez in for his brace, but this was purely a consolation.
Despite equalling their hosts try count, the difference was the immaculate kicking from their fly half, and their ability to retain possession for long periods.
In spite of a below par team performance, the coaching team highlighted Joe Young and Jake Powell as joint Players of the Match.
