New Panteg 23 Llantrisant 20

New Panteg entertained Llantrisant, the home of the Royal Mint, and to coin a phrase, it was a game of two halves. This was a pulsating cup clash and it was the visitors who cashed in early with the games opening score. Despite a good turnover by Tegs forwards, the resulting clearance kick was cleverly charged down and pounced upon for a converted score. An indiscretion at a ruck cost Teg, as Llan extended their lead with a well struck penalty. Finally getting some useful possession, Teg pounded the visitors defensive line. Fly half Jones spotted the smallest of gaps and deposited the ball over the whitewash to open Tegs account with a fiver. Llantrisant had the wealth of possession in the opening half, and deservedly scored two quick tries for a priceless interval lead of 20 - 5.
To Tegs credit, and with the elements in their favour, they used the rich pickings of good ball to gain a foothold in the match. Fullback Winstone goaled a penalty, before scrum half Gomez peaked the home supports interest with a try, converted by Winstone. Fabulous continuity of play resulted in flyer Davies vaulting in at the corner to level the scores. With minutes remaining a Llan forward failed to withdraw from the tackle area quickly enough, and Winstone hit the jackpot with the winning penalty, tipping the balance Tegs way.
New Pantegs number 8 Charlie Gardner was given the player of the match accolade for an inspirational all round display. A huge thanks to the Black Army, for an incredibly tough, and good natured game, and for the after match camaraderie.
