New Panteg 19 Crickhowell 20

New Panteg finally lost their season long unbeaten record, courtesy of a hastily rearranged fixture against a revitalised Crickhowell team. Teg started the stronger in testing conditions, and were soon ahead when both wingmen combined for a terrific score. A superb run and pinpoint chip from Davies was coolly collected by Gomez to score near the posts. Uncharacteristically Bury missed a sitter of a conversation which would prove costly. A scrum infringement saw Crick narrow the lead, before they forced their way over the Teg line for a converted try. The home side were becoming increasingly frustrated with the barrage of penalties the official was awarding, together with 3 yellow cards, denying them any worthwhile possession and territory.
The second half saw the hosts gain a foothold in the game, with the industrious Gardner plowing through the middle of a maul for a seven pointer. The penalty count was still a huge problem, and Crick regained the lead from another perceived indiscretion. Despite awful handling conditions, Teg threw the ball wide for the electric Davies to beat the covering defence, for a try converted by Bury. With time almost up, a further flurry of penalties pinned Teg on their own line. Crick again cleverly forced their way over wide out to get within a point. A fabulously struck kick from the touchline sailed majestically over for the lead. There was still time for Teg to win the game with a chance at a 30m penalty, however Bury nudged it agonisingly wide. Davies was given the man of the match accolade as his speed was a constant threat in both attack and defence. New Panteg will take solace that their first defeat was inflicted by a very good, well drilled outfit, who will prove difficult to beat for the remainder of the season.
