New Panteg 30 Crumlin 12

This latest encounter saw the conclusion of this seasons trilogy between these two sides, with New Panteg hoping to complete the treble over Crumlin. As has been the pattern in the two previous games, Crumlin controlled possession and territory early on. This initial dominance soon resulted in an early score. A clean lineout take for the visitors and a clever peel, opened the scoring. Teg were jolted into action and a ferocious scrum surge from the Teg eight, stole the ball. This possession was swiftly passed wide, and a superb offload from centre Jones gave winger Gomez an easy run in. With possession now more readily available, Teg finally gained a foothold in this must win match. A powerful driving lineout saw second rower Bailey emerge from the melee with the spoils. Then came a fortuitous try for Teg as numerous players hacked a bouncing ball upfield, and scrum half Edmunds won the race to touch down. Bury goaled the conversion for a half time lead of 17 - 5. This was encouraging, but the penalty count against the hosts was huge, with the referee becoming increasingly frustrated.
This poor discipline continued into the second half, with Teg being reduced to 13 men early, through 2 yellow cards. This numerical advantage was pounced upon by the Crum, who forced their way over for a deserved 7 pointer. Bury reduced the nervousness with two immaculate penalties, but with the top of the league standings so tight, a further bonus point try was crucial. Not for the first time this season, it took a desperate situation for Tegs backline to release the shackles. A fabulous handling movement put Jones into space with the games final play. He still had a considerable amount to do, but his poise, strength and agility took him over the line, stretching for what could be a vital score at seasons end.
With a very tough run in of games, promotion and the league title are still in Tegs hands. However a huge squad effort will be essential, with 4 games in 11 days. Man of the Match was awarded to Elliot Jones, for his game management, sublime offloading and his bonus point score.
