New Panteg 52 Bedwellty 17

The final game of the season was played in tropical conditions and a party atmosphere, as Teg celebrated their promotion to division 3. Bedwellty arrived depleted but determined, and showed their class by joining a guard of honour for two Teg retirees. Centre Dafydd Heneghan signed off with two terrific tries, and a promise to have a few run outs for the Steelers next season. Former captain and powerhouse prop Matt Gibbs also made a promise, to throw his boots in the river!! Gibbo has been a tremendous servant over the last couple of centuries, and is rumoured to have gone to school with Moses. The average age of the side will reduce considerably next season, but also the quality of the scrum.
Teg started the game as hotly as the weather, and scored tries at will, playing some scintillating running rugby. 8 times the whitewash was crossed in the first half, through Heneghan x2, Gomez x2, Cook, Bury, Winstone and Bailey, for an interval lead of 52 - 07.
Bedwellty could easily have thrown in the towel, but showed tremendous resilience and character to come out fighting. They scored two quality tries to win the second half.
Heneghan and Gibbs were named joint players of the match. The former for an excellent display topped with two fabulous tries. The latter, entirely on sentiment.
Bedwellty gained more plaudits by staying hours after the game, joining in the celebrations, and trouncing Teg in the drinking games.
