New Panteg 55 New Tredegar 0

Our first game of 2024 saw the visit of New Tredegar to Jarrolds Fields. Firstly huge admiration to the Newts for travelling with a depleted squad, and they were grateful to New Panteg for lending them three of our finest athletes to make up their numbers.
Early controlled phase created gaps in the visitors defence for centre Oliver to exploit, but the expected floodgates failed to open. New Tredegar battled valiantly and denied Teg any further opportunities until late in the half. A moment of brilliance from scrum half Winstone gave the supporting back rower Cook a scoring pass, and fullback Bury nailed the conversion. Another searing break of individual mastery, this time from Bury, found the supporting dynamo flanker MacLean who cantered over. Bury nudged over the kick for a 19 nil lead at the break.
After numerous unforced handling errors in the first half, Teg considerably upped the intensity and execution in the second half. Straight from the kick off Bury was on the end of some fabulous interplay to secure the all important bonus point try. Bury added his second try moments later, and Teg were now scoring at will ,despite some courageous defence from New Tredegar. There were further scores from replacement fullback Jones, prop Bowles, flying wingman Davies and the industrious hooker Wakely. With the score at 55 nil, the referee decided to call a early halt to proceedings with ten minutes still on the clock.
There was a great personal performance from second rower Barwood, whose barnstorming runs were outstanding all afternoon. However no.8 Shane Cook was named Man of the Match for his irrepressible performance with both ball in hand and his ferocious defence.
