New Panteg 20 Oakdale 12

New Panteg looked to return to winning ways as they entertained basement boys Oakdale. Regardless of league positions, this campaign has regularly shown that any team is capable of claiming victory. For a second successive week, the team was severely tested by numerous player unavailability, but the coaching staff will be delighted with the strength of the extended squad.
The first half an hour of this contest was an arm wrestle, which stayed scoreless. Oakdale monopolised possession, keeping play tight, sending big runners into contact. Teg used their scraps of possession to put width on the game, trying to tire their heavier opponents. Teg achieved fine field position and gained quality lineout ball. Great continuity of play saw gaps appear in the Oakdale defence, and Bury capitalised for an opening score. A second try came almost immediately, as a sweeping backs move took Teg to within metres. However, an indiscretion resulted in a penalty. A petulant act from an Oakdale player saw this reversed and a clever quick tapped penalty saw centre Jones rewarded with a converted score. Teg were now well in the ascendancy, and another length of the field move should have capped a fabulous end to the half. Unfortunately, the referee spotted a knock on, missed by everyone else at the ground.
Oakdale responded well in the second half, scoring a try from a rolling maul, expertly converted from wide out. Another enterprising quick penalty saw flanker Gardner breach the defence. With Teg reduced to 13 men, Oakdale made it a nervy finish, scoring a second try, before a Jones penalty secured a hard earned win.
Prop Powell was given the Player of the Match award for an industrious display, including a huge tackle count.
A huge thank you to Paul Guest for the brilliant photos.
