New Panteg 30 Gwernyfed 25

After 3 pulsating games this season, only 8 points seperate the two teams, such has been the parity between the sides. This latest encounter would have a huge bearing on who would gain the final promotion spot, and incredibly the sun was shining.
After swapping early penalties it was Gwernyfed who capitalised on some broken play to score a smart opener. Teg countered with a try of their own, when live wire scrum half Winstone was the recipient of some great handling. Bury, who was to be immaculate with the boot all afternoon, nailed the kick. Despite having the ascendancy in the scrum for most of the half, Teg found themselves being shoved backwards on their opponents 22m line. Number 8 Gardner, picked up from the base cleverly, and a beautiful pirouette took him clear of any defence to score beneath the posts. Bury added the easy extras plus a further penalty, for an interval score of 20 - 13.
Great interplay from the outset of the second period saw Gwernyfed level the scores, before Bury nudged another penalty to regain the lead. Both teams seemed to suffer with a bout of nerves due to the games importance, and the error count was growing. It was from a flawed attack from the visitors that Teg gained some breathing space. A dropped catch was hacked on by centre Jones, who regathered, and coolly finished with style. At this stage Teg had done enough to gain automatic promotion but went in search of a bonus point score. A dangerous play broke down, gifting Gwernyfed late possession. They moved the ball skillfully downfield with a mixture of good ball retention and a penalty kick landing 5m from the Teg line. A clever lineout peel with the games last play gave Gwernyfed a losing bonus point, and denied Teg an early promotion celebration. With two tough games still to play, Teg need a solitary point to gain entry to division 3, their highest echelon since joining the league structure. Finishing as champions is still a mathematical possibility, but looking increasingly unlikely.
Player of the match was awarded to No. 8 Charlie Gardner, whose ball in hand running, coupled with his inspirational defensive capabilities, was a constant headache for the visitors.
The heavy end of season schedule continues this Wednesday, with the return fixture versus Newport Saracens RFC .
