Crumlin 15 New Panteg 26

This eagerly awaited top of the table clash certainly didn't disappoint in terms of entertainment and quality. Both teams were intent on playing attractive, expansive rugby from the outset, and it was Crumlin Rugby Football Club who started the brighter. The hosts dominated possession in the opening salvo, restricting New Panteg to testing their well organised defence, until a turnover and a fabulous 50 : 22 gave Teg some breathing space. From the resulting lineout, great handling saw powerful centre Bowles force his way over for James to convert. The pattern of the game continued, with Crumlin having the lions share of the ball and Teg defending superbly. Constant pressure on the Crumlin ball resulted in a forced error and another turnover and fellow centre Jones raced in unopposed from 40 metres for an unlikely 14 point lead. The Teg pack led by front rowers Gibbs, Wakely and Scott were dominant at scrum time, but Crumlins driving lineout was equally impressive. It was from this type of imposing set piece that Crumlin narrowed the gap with their first try. With possession finally becoming more abundant Teg were able to sweep the ball wide, stretching their opponents regularly. Clever interplay between the Teg forwards saw second row Young crash over for a magnificent score, easily goaled again by James for a significant 21 - 5 lead at the interval.
The start to the second half wasn't what the coaching team had instilled at the break with the restart failing to be regathered. Good assertive phase play saw Crumlin gain good field position, from which they forced themselves over for a touchdown. Teg responded in the best possible way, forcing their opponents into some desperate defending, with a series of flowing attacks. The backs and forwards combined seamlessly, resulting in skipper Scott crossing for the all important bonus point score. Crumlin continued to play attractive rugby despite the scoreline, and again narrowed the lead with a further try but Teg managed the game to a satisfying conclusion.
Despite the importance of the game, the manner and spirit it was played, was a credit to both sides. Teg swapped places with Crumlin to again top the league, but know there is a very tough run in to maintain these giddy heights.
With top performances all across the pitch, it wasn't easy to pick a Man of the Match. Matt Bowles came agonisingly close with his strong running and huge defensive hits. However Liam Bailey in the boilerhouse was immense in all aspects of his play. He carried with power and intelligence and defended heroically, and his communication in support of his teammates was instrumental in claiming the honour.
